CDG expands handset testing program

COSTA MESA, Calif.-The CDMA Development Group announced that Wireless Test Systems in San Diego, Calif., and Telecommunications Technology Association in Seoul, Korea, have been authorized as CDMA Certification Forum test facilities for CDMA2000 devices. The move is an attempt to speed up the testing process for new phones, thereby getting them into the market more quickly.

“The CDMA industry is rapidly building its capabilities to deliver high-quality products to the market at a lower cost and in a timely manner so operators are able to capitalize on the growing demand for advanced wireless communications,” said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. “There are already operational CCF facilities in North America and Asia, and our goal is to establish a truly global network of testing resources to better serve the unique needs of individual markets.”

The forum, founded by Motorola Inc., Qualcomm Inc., Tesltra Corp., U.S. Cellular Corp. and VIA Telecom, said the test and certification process allows devices to be tested and certified in an affordable and timely manner.

The CDG said WTS and TTA are accepting CDMA2000 1x devices and will use a combination of laboratory and field tests over a period of one month to determine whether or not the devices are ready for certification.

“We are very pleased to see how the highly automated CCF test process has standardized and expedited the testing of products,” commented Michael Spitzer, president and chief executive of WTS. “It will help us meet the needs of CDMA handset vendors and carriers that have short development cycles to get their devices to market quickly.”

“By certifying our test lab here in Korea, the CCF has ensured that the product certification needs of the CDMA2000 industry in Asia will be well served,” added Kyung-Sik Kim, general manager of CDMA Testing at the TTA. “The CCF certification process is an essential step towards improving the availability, interoperability and affordability of the increasingly sophisticated variety of CDMA2000 devices.”

The first CCT test facility, News IQ Labs, opened in November 2005 in San Diego. To date, the CCF has certified just two CDMA2000 1x phones-the Axesstel L800 and P830 fixed wireless desktop phones.
