LUXEMBOURG-Mobile operator Millicom International Cellular said it’s mulling over its options after receiving “a high number of unsolicited approaches,” according to a company statement.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the cellular carrier received indications of interest from as many as 10 unnamed companies, including wireless providers in Asia and the Middle East. Millicom has wireless operations in 16 countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa that cover around 391 million people.
“The company remains confident in its current strategy and growth prospects and the outcome of the review may not lead to any transaction,” Millicom noted.
BellSouth launches wireless broadband in Florida town
ATLANTA-BellSouth Corp. launched wireless broadband services in DeLand, Fla., which is the telecommunications providers sixth market launch in as many months.
BellSouth noted the pre-WiMAX service, which is being offered to both residential and business customers, provides high-speed Internet access with downstream speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps without the need for a phone line. The system transmits signals between local radio towers and a desktop subscriber modem using BellSouth’s licensed WCS 2.3 GHz spectrum.
The launch follows similar deployments in Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
“For many people, wireless broadband may be their first opportunity to experience high-speed Internet,” said Marshall Criser, president of BellSouth Florida.
BellSouth controls 40 percent of Cingular Wireless L.L.C., which is in the process of launching its own wireless broadband network using UMTS/HSDPA technology.
