Sprint Nextel adds MTV TV channels

NEW YORK—Sprint Nextel Corp. added to its mobile video offerings with a new deal to add content from MTV Networks to its Sprint TV service.

The carrier added four channels from the Viacom International Inc. subsidiary: CMT features news and video from country and western artists, Comedy Central’s offerings include highlights from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and VH1 broadcasts include music videos and streaming audio content. Offerings from the company’s flagship network will include clips from hit shows “The Real World,” “Punk’d” and “Beavis & Butt-head” as well as original made-for-mobile video.

Sprint Nextel is charging $6 per month for each new channel in addition to data charges.

The news is the latest development in MTV’s aggressive move into wireless. The company has invested $50 million in Amp’d Mobile Inc. and said it plans to work with the mobile virtual network operator to produce both repurposed and mobile-exclusive content. MTV has also teamed with Motorola Inc. to produce made-for-mobile comedy shorts.
