HANNOVER, Germany—Pantech Group spotlighted a variety of upscale handsets at the CeBIT trade show in Hannover, Germany this week in an effort to further establish itself as a new player in European and global markets. The company, one of the largest handset makers in South Korea, opened offices in Britain, France, Germany and elsewhere last year, and has made strategic acquisitions or distribution deals to support its global expansion plans.
Pantech is touting more than three dozen handset models at CeBIT, nearly two-thirds of them GSM models destined for European markets and more than one-third CDMA phones to address North American and Asian-Pacific markets. The handsets offer competitive music and camera functions. One of the company’s standout features is a fingerprint scanner, currently offered on the manufacturer’s G-6200 model; Pantech debuted its first GSM phone with a fingerprint scanner two years ago.
Last year, Pantech strengthened its portfolio of handset models when it acquired SK Teletech Co.—the handset business of SK Telecom, South Korea’s top mobile network operator. Pantech sells phones in a variety of markets, including the United States, although its U.S. phones generally carry brands other than Pantech’s.
