Sprint Nextel calls into Vegas Monorail, Luxor

RESTON, Va.—Sprint Nextel Corp. announced new services in Las Vegas that allow customers to use their mobile phone to buy tickets, register at hotels and receive mobile coupons.

The company introduced a new service that allows wireless customers to purchase tickets for the Las Vegas Monorail system from their wireless phone. Customers can purchase tickets by sending a text message with the word “ride” to the short code 99630. Customers then receive a mobile ticket via text message on their phone and hold the ticket image in front of a kiosk scanner, provided by Swiftpass, to get a physical ticket.

Mobile monorail tickets cost the same as regular monorail tickets at $5 per ride. Standard text message rates apply.

Sprint said it trialed mobile ticketing earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show and will demonstrate the service this week at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the CTIA show.

In addition, Sprint said it is working with the Luxor Las Vegas hotel to offer mobile hotel registration, mobile coupons and mobile line passes to the property’s RA nightclub. Hotel guests receive a wireless alert when their room is ready if they pre-register with their mobile phone and coupons for discounts on meals, show tickets or other hotel amenities.
