SECAUCUS, N.J.—Panasonic Corp. announced it acquired wireless chip-maker Tropian Inc., a Cupertino, Calif.-based company that develops polar modulation techniques for use in wireless transmitter applications. Panasonic is the North American arm of Osaka, Japan-based electronics company Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Panasonic said it would integrate Tropian’s technology into its new Emerging Advanced RF Laboratory. The technology helps reduce power consumption in wireless devices such as cell phones.
“Tropian’s unique Polar modulation technologies will be an important driver in the digitization of the conventional analog radio-frequency elements within wireless communications systems. I believe this technology is critical for the reduction in power consumption and miniaturization of equipment, and will speed the early realization of the ubiquitous network society,” said Susumu Koike, executive vice president of Matsushita Electric Industrial.
