InPhonic signs online deal with Amazon.com

WASHINGTON—Online wireless retailer InPhonic Inc. inked a “multi-year” deal to sell its products and services on Amazon.com.

The announcement marks the first third-party wireless deal for Amazon, which sells phones and services from all four Tier 1 operators. InPhonic, which markets offerings under the WireFly brand, said it will pay Amazon advertising fees as well as a one-time fee for each phone sold and activated through the site.

InPhonic plans to sell both prepaid and postpaid phones as well as accessories.

“This is an alliance of two e-commerce leaders offering one unrivaled wireless program,” said InPhonic Chief Executive Officer David Steinberg.

Indeed, the move could be an important one for InPhonic. In addition to raising its profile and increasing Internet distribution channels, the deal allows InPhonic to serve as the “anchor third party merchant” within Amazon’s wireless store.
