BenQ 1Q down on handset sales

MUNICH, Germany—Taiwanese handset maker BenQ Corp. reported disappointing first-quarter results, including handset shipments of 7 million units, a 39.6-percent drop from the 11.1 million units the company shipped in the fourth quarter of 2005.

Management blamed the drop in handset sales on the retirement of older handset models as the company prepared to launch newer models, but analysts believe BenQ suffered during the quarter as it integrated Siemens’ mobile phone unit into its operations.

The company posted first-quarter net losses of $155 million, a sharp drop from the $9.3 million in profits it scored in the same quarter a year ago.
