HELSINKI, Finland—Publisher Rovio Mobile is looking to add another dimension with the acquisition of 3-D technology developer Pixelgene Ltd.
Rovio, which was founded two years ago, specializes in dark action and adventure games for mobile phones. The company hopes to use Pixelgene’s technology to create 3-D titles for Java, BREW and Symbian platforms.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the first titles to use Pixelgene’s 3-D capabilities are already in production. Both companies are headquartered in Helsinki.
“Our aim is to be No. 1 in the mobile 3-D market,” said Fernando Herrera, Pixelgene’s co-founder who was named chief executive officer of Rovio. “Gamers have learned to expect thrilling game experiences from Rovio, and that’s what we’ll continue to deliver—now both in 2-D and 3-D.”
