FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—InnoPath Software and Red Bend Software proposed a new format standard for packaging and distribution of firmware over-the-air updates between mobile industry players to make FOTA between parties easier and less expensive.
Wireless carriers use FOTA and mobile device management to provision, diagnose, update and repair subscribers’ handsets. Interoperability standards are considered a driver of the MDM market and open standards are intended to foster growth of the sector.
Red Bend and InnoPath said they plan to collaborate to obtain approval on the new format, dubbed Package Ingest Container, as part of the Open Mobile Alliance’s device management standard. The OMA is a standard-setting organization for interoperable service enablers.
The implementation of PIC could provide mobile handset vendors, carriers and MDM system vendors with a uniform information exchange format for the distribution of FOTA updates and mobile applications.
InnoPath offers MDM solutions, while Red Bend offers mobile software management solutions.
