UCT licenses OFDM patents from Qualcomm

SAN DIEGO—United Computer & Telecommunications said it will develop and sell OFDM/OFDMA subscriber units, routers and modem cards under an agreement with Qualcomm Inc., the companies said.

The royalty-bearing agreement gives UCT rights to patents Qualcomm acquired with last year’s $600 million buyout of OFDM technology startup Flarion Technologies Inc. Financial details of UCT’s agreement with Qualcomm were not disclosed.

Qualcomm will also provide design and engineering support to boost UCT’s production of FLASH-OFDM devices. UCT plans to operate the new business through subsidiary AnyData.

“This license agreement will enable us to supply our customers with value-added wireless solutions and help expand their applications capabilities,” said Soon Shin, AnyData’s chief executive officer.

AnyData is the second company to license Qualcomm’s OFDM/OFDMA patents. SOMA Networks Inc., which provides last-mile broadband wireless access technology, inked a similar deal in April.
