SAN JOSE, Calif.—Immersion Corp. scored a substantial win, inking a deal to put its VibeTonz Mobile Player on phones from LG Electronics Co. Ltd.
The developer said LG has licensed VibeTonz technology, which offers “vibro-tactile effects” that make phones vibrate and pulse. The feature is used to underscore the beat or melody of ringtones, provide touch feedback during mobile gaming sessions, and provide alerts for dropped calls and messages.
LG will integrate the software and use Immersion’s software development kit and APIs to develop touch-enabled applications and media.
VibeTonz’s wares have been licensed by operators including Sprint Nextel Corp., Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA Inc. and Orange plc. Shares of Immersion were up 52 cents, or more than 9 percent, to $6.12 on news of the deal.
