- Belgian car fanatics can now download a free ringtone that features the revving engine of a Porsche Cayman S. The ringtone is an interactive “mupy” promotion offered by communication agency DDB, urban furniture company JCDecaux and wireless marketing firm Alterwave. People passing within 10 meters of a poster will receive an invitation on their cellular phone and can accept the free ringtone download. The interactive mupy is installed in Knokke-le-Zoute, Belgium.
- Mobile messaging company OZ is appealing to the fashion sense of Canadian consumers in an attempt to drive usage of MSN Messenger on mobile phones. The company is offering a chance to win a $1,000 gift certificate to the Gap or a new Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. A900 mobile phone to customers who log on to www.connectedinstyle.com and learn about using MSN Messenger on their cellular phone. The promotion is a collaboration of OZ, Bell Canada, Gap Canada and MSN Canada.
- Mixxer, which offers mobile music content, said it is offering free mobile content from the forthcoming movie “Snakes on a Plane.” Content includes ringtones, movie clips, screensavers and user-generated content related to the movie.
Not to be outdone, Palm Inc. notes that a Sprint Nextel Corp. version of it Treo device makes “a small but pivotal appearance in the film.” Palm notes that the Treo is “the perfect device when you need to close a business deal, blog from the red-carpet of a major movie premiere or of course when you encounter Snakes on a Plane!” Very witty.
While the name of the movie is a bit cryptic, it appears to involve some form of reptile on a form of flying transportation.
- A British Airways flight en route from London to New York returned to London after crew members heard a cellular phone ringing somewhere in the cabin but nobody would claim the phone as theirs. Company officials said the phone began ringing about an hour into the flight. The device was found on the floor. The crew elected to return to London as a precaution amid heightened airline security related to the alleged terror plot broken up earlier this month in the country.
