Showtime goes off deck with new video content

NEW YORK—Content provider Mobile Streams said it built an off-deck WAP portal to provide content from Showtime Networks Inc.

The company said it will offer video clips from various Showtime programs. The portal initially will offer video clips and wallpapers from the new series “Dexter” as well as video clips from “Weeds” and the new sketch comedy “The Underground.”

Mobile Streams said it will add content from “Sleeper Cell,” “The L Word” and Showtime Championship Boxing shortly.

The launch coincides with a promotional campaign surrounding the premier of “Dexter.” The campaign incorporates a text messaging push that prompts mobile users to send a text message to receive more information about the show.

Off-deck activity has boomed in the last 18 months, and analysts expect the trend to continue as media companies and major brands look to approach users directly through their handsets.

That Showtime is making off-deck move is especially interesting since other TV channels like HBO, NBC, CBS and Fox have focused exclusively on signing carrier deals to sell their content over carrier decks.
