Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

  • Australia: Nokia Corp. said it is providing HSDPA technology to Vodafone Australia as the carrier upgrades its network.

 

Wi-Fi

  • United States: US Internet and Aptilo Networks said they have been selected to provide equipment and services for a citywide Wi-Fi network in Minneapolis. Also in the United States, Nortel Networks said it won Wi-Fi contracts in three cities, including Occoquan, Va., Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Carlsbad, N.M. In California, 5G Wireless Communications Inc. said it provided the 802.11b/g wireless equipment for an experimental network being built on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, to test communications technologies in man-made or natural disasters.

 

WiMAX

  • Puerto Rico: Islanet Inc. said it launched a pre-WiMAX network using equipment provided by Navini Networks.

     

  • Sweden: SB Broadband AB launched a high-speed wireless broadband service using pre-WiMAX 802.16e equipment provided by Navini Networks.

 

Miscellaneous

  • Israel: ADC said it has joined a consortium of a dozen companies led by Nortel Israel that are working toward deploying a joint wireless municipal network in Ariel.
