Weekly infrastructure awards wrap-up

The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

Cellular

  • Argentina: Coperativa Telefonica de Calafate Ltd. launched a commercial CDMA2000 1x network in the 450 MHz band in El Calafate and El Chalten using equipment from ZTE and Huawei.

     

  • Australia: Nokia Corp. and Vodafone Australia signed a $230 million managed services agreement that lasts seven years. The agreement includes engineering, operations and maintenance of Vodafone’s HSDPA, 3G, GPRS and GSM networks.

     

  • China: Nokia said it signed a GSM expansion contract with China Mobile Group Zhejiang Co. Ltd. The $43 million contract calls for the company to expand the carrier’s GSM coverage in urban and rural areas of the Zhejiang province. Nokia also signed a GPRS packet core network expansion contract with Guangdong Mobile Communications Corporation Ltd.

     

  • India: Nokia said Bharti Airtel Ltd. awarded it a contract to expand its managed GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in eight circles and deploy a pan-Indian WAP solution across its network. The deal is valued at $400 million.

     

  • Ireland: Actix said it provided optimization and rollout services to O2 Ireland as the carrier deployed a GSM/GPRS/UMTS network.

     

  • Ukraine: Nokia and Ukrainian fixed line operator Ukrtelecom JSC signed a three-year frame agreement calling for Nokia to supply 3G core and radio network equipment, including W-CDMA 3G/HSDPA equipment, as the carrier upgrades its network.

     

  • United States: Nokia announced it completed implementation and optimization services for Cellular One’s EDGE data and AMR voice services in northeast Arizona, northwest New Mexico and southeast Utah.

 

Wi-Fi

  • United States: AirWave Wireless said it supplied its management platform to Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia for a wireless network that includes more than 7,000 individual wireless access points. Also in the United States, Citizens Communications Co. said it plans to deploy its Frontier Mobile wireless broadband service in Cookeville, Tenn., and Carlinville, Ill.

 

Miscellaneous

  • France: Neuf Cegetel said it is using an IMS- ready system provided by Nortel Networks to deliver GSM/Wi-Fi fixed/mobile convergence services.

     

  • United States: WPCS International Inc. said it has won contracts totaling $3.8 million for its in-building engineering services for clients including The Department of Emergency Mangement/Homeland Security, the U.S. Army, Washington University Medical Center and Black & Veatch.

     

  • Worldwide: SeaMobile Inc. said it will use UTStarcom Inc.’s MovingMedia 2000 all-IP CDMA2000 network solution to provide wireless voice and data services to segments of the maritime industry, including cruise ships.
