Opera Software ASA continued to gain momentum with a deal to embed its wireless browser on handsets from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
The developer said the South Korean manufacturer will use Opera Mobile, which formats Internet content for small screens by stripping out data-heavy graphics and emphasizing vertical scrolling. Opera Mobile is designed for smart phones; the company’s Mini browser supports Java-enabled devices.
Opera offers a browser for PC users as well as wireless Web surfers. The company has gained considerable traction in the mobile browser space, inking partnerships with Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp. and France Telecom Orange, among others. The company’s competitors include Openwave Systems Inc., a longtime player, and Novarra Inc., which has also scored some impressive carrier deals.
“Our strategies in working closely across the board with major handset manufacturers, operators and directly with end users have made Opera Mobile an attractive product,” said Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner.
