Motorola Inc. has teamed up with Discover Financial Services to trial mobile payment and account management services.
The trial uses Motorola phones and its M-Wallet software and will allow participants to check their Discover Card account balance, view payment history and make purchases with their phone using NFC technology. Up to 1,000 people in Chicago and Salt Lake City are expected to participate in the trial.
“Not only will this pilot give us feedback on the technology, but also it will provide valuable information about how merchants and card members interface with it,” said Joby Orlowsky, vice president of marketing for Discover Network. “This ensures that we deliver a customer experience that is seamless and relevant, and that meets their expectations every step of the way.”
The trial is just the latest in a long string of efforts to tie financial transactions with cellphones. Indeed, Nokia Corp. and Motorola both have announced similar trials with various credit card companies over the past several years.
