A conglomeration of major players in the wireless industry is putting their collective weight behind a mobile TV profile that supports fast implementation and ensures interoperability in Europe. The new profile simplifies the Open Mobile Alliance Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite (OMA-BCAST) to achieve these goals.
The main features of the profile include an advance program guide, support for multiple broadcast technologies, and content and service protections using the SIM card or digital rights management. The OMA-BCAST specification supports DVB-H and 3G mobile broadcast services. The goal is to enable operators to offer more choices in their mobile TV programming.
The profile was defined and developed by the Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum and supported by more than twelve major companies representing handset manufacturers, technology developers, network operators and carriers. The group believes the development of OMA-BCAST will speed up large scale mobile TV deployments throughout Europe.
Another mobile TV acronym: OMA-BCAST
