Georgia city deploys Moto’s Wi-Fi

The city of Macon, Ga., announced it deployed a citywide Wi-Fi network using equipment and technology from Motorola Inc. The city deployed Motorola’s Motomesh offering in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band for residents and city workers and in the licensed 4.9 GHz band for public-safety uses.
“Our administration has taken substantial steps in meeting its promise of providing cutting edge wireless technologies to both Macon’s citizens and its first responders,” said C. Jack Ellis, Macon’s mayor. “We needed a solution that would provide our first responders with the information they require in the field, while allowing other city agencies and, most importantly, our residents to move forward in the digital age.”
The news is notable as it signals Motorola’s full entrance into the muni-Wi-Fi playground. Motorola is now competing against the likes of EarthLink Inc. and others in deploying citywide, Wi-Fi networks.
