Apple Inc.’s iPhone goes on sale tonight at 6 p.m. The hype surrounding the device has reached a fevered pitch, as lines have begun forming outside Apple and AT&T Mobility stores in cities across the country. Indeed, the release of the iPhone is perhaps the most-hyped event in the history of the wireless industry.
The iPhone, exclusive to AT&T Mobility, features a touchscreen, visual voicemail, Apple’s Safari Internet browser and a number of other unique services and applications. The phone also doubles for a video-capable iPod, and sells in 4 GB and 8 GB versions.
Speculation as to how the phone will affect the wireless industry runs the gamut. Critics contend the iPhone’s high price will make it a niche device, while proponents believe it could change the way cellphones are sold across the world. One thing is clear, however: The iPhone stands as a major event in the wireless industry, and has sparked in-depth discussions on topics ranging from networks and infrastructure to hardware and handsets to content and applications.
Below is RCR Wireless News’ coverage of the iPhone, from its official unveiling in January to this week’s reviews of its features and functions. Plus, check out exclusive photos of the iPhone waiting lines forming in the Denver area.
