Crack open a good book… on your smartphone

Looking for a few good books for your smartphone? Motricity might be able to help.

The content company said that its eBook customers will be able to purchase and receive eBooks over-the-air directly to their smartphones, and that its eReader Pro for Windows Mobile technology will be offered for free for a limited period of time. It was previously sold for $10.

EBooks are offered through Motricity’s eReader.com business unit. Customers who purchase books that are compatible with Windows Mobile can search for eBooks and access their “online bookshelf” through their wireless deivce. Motricity said that it is continuing to invest in its eReader technology and would support OTA delivery for additional operating systems “in the near future.”

Alex Bloom, general manager of Motricity’s smartphone operations, noted that customers who want an eBook on their mobile device currently have to download the book on a PC and then transfer it to the smartphone.

“We’ve already seen through our experience with games, ringtones and other content types that making transactions simpler and more immediate helps increase consumer adoption,” Bloom said.
