Flash memory will continue to dominate in mobile phones during the next few years, despite inroads being made by new hard disk drive (HDD) solutions in handheld devices, according to a new study from Parks Associates.
The company predicts 99% of mobile phones will have a Flash memory solution next year, and that figure will drop only to 96% by the end of 2012.
“The benefits of Flash memory-nonvolatility, fast read times, and shock resistance-make this technology ideal for mobile phones and other handheld devices such as MP3 players and digital cameras,” said Chris Roden, an analyst at Parks Associates. “However, HDD will have some market opportunities in the near future.”
The report says some segments of mobile users-particularly those in the early adopter and early majority categories-will require devices with higher storage capacity provided by HDD.
“These consumers will require greater storage, and the low cost per gigabyte will carve out a market opportunity in handheld devices for HDD memory,” Roden said.
