Leap expands Texas presence

Leap Wireless International Inc. will be launching its Cricket unlimited wireless services across areas of Texas bordering the Rio Grande and the Gulf of Mexico beginning tomorrow. The service will be available in the cities of Beaumont, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Laredo and McAllen covering a population of about 2.4 million people. The expansion will bring Cricket’s national population coverage to about 54 million people with 25,700-square miles covered in Texas alone.
Using spectrum acquired in 2006’s advanced wireless services auction, the carrier says its on pace to double the size of its company by 2010. Leap counted just under 3 million customers at the end of 2007.
The Texas service launch will come with 100 new points of distribution in the region including 10 company-owned stores, 37 exclusive dealers and 53 indirect dealers. Customers in the new Texas markets will get to choose from unlimited rate plans ranging from $35 to $60 a month, the company said.
