Wireless at NXTcomm: Wireless had a muted role at the event as it traditionally takes a back seat to its wireline competitors at NXTcomm shows, and this year’s event was no different. However, wireless was not totally absent as keynote addresses by AT&T’s Randall Stephenson, Telstra’s Sol Trujillo and Verizon’s Denny Strigl all highlighted the importance of wireless in their companies’ plans for converged service offerings.

Struggling Moto: The troubles likely are to continue for the world’s second-largest handset maker. Analyst Tero Kuittinen at Global Crown Capital said that U.S. carriers are pulling back support for Motorola, and characterized the vendor’s pending product launches as “a half-baked mess.”

Handset fun: The world’s handset makers are beginning to gear up for the critical fourth-quarter holiday shopping season. The fourth quarter is typically when cellphone companies make the most money, and they usually start getting ready for it during summer months.
