Shipments of consumer electronics devices embedded with Wi-Fi technology could reach nearly 1 billion by 2012, according to new research from In-Stat.
More than 294 million devices with Wi-Fi shipped last year, said In-Stat.
Wi-Fi is a valued technology for the CE market due to its large installed base in mobile PCs and home networks, its flexibility and mature ecosystem, said the report.
By 2011, cellular/Wi-Fi handsets will surpass mobile PCs as the largest category of Wi-Fi devices, predicts the firm. Digital TVs equipped with Wi-Fi will also be a large market based simply on sheer volume of digital TV shipments, said the firm.
