Strong iPhone sales bolster Apple results

Apple Inc. posted a 49% increase in revenues and 90% increase in profits for its second fiscal quarter of 2010 ended March 27, bolstered by continued strong demand for its now iconic iPhone device.

Apple said it sold 8.75 million iPhones during the quarter, which was a 131% increase compared with the second fiscal quarter of 2009. The boost was helped by broader distribution of the device that is now available in 96 countries across the world.

Revenues from the iPhone and related product offerings increased 124% year-over-year to $5.5 billion and accounted for just over 40% of the company’s $13.5 billion in total revenues for the quarter.

AT&T Mobility, the iPhone’s exclusive domestic carrier, reported this morning that it activated 2.7 million iPhones on its network during its fiscal first quarter.

Pictures turned up this week of what appears to be the next version of the iPhone that Apple is expected to announce this summer.
