Ericsson, Motorola partner on LTE-based public safety initiative

Motorola Inc. (MOT) and Ericsson (ERIC) said they have teamed up to provide an LTE-based public-safety broadband network solution.
The service will use Ericsson’s LTE access equipment and parts of its packet core and related services along with Motorola’s LTE core and interoperability platform. Motorola said its “advanced devices, video security and command and control solutions will leverage these platforms to offer public safety unprecedented situational collaboration and situational awareness.”
In addition to the collaboration, Motorola said it will provide services to design, implement, support, secure and manage the network deployments.
Motorola announced last month an agreement with the city of San Francisco to build out a public safety network using 700 MHz spectrum and LTE technology. The network – to be built in part with a $50.6 million government grant as well as $21.9 million in funding from Motorola – is to be backward compatible with the Project 25 equipment used by public safety workers.
