Capital Markets: BlackBerry Partners focuses on mobile; AT&T buys inCompass assets; and more

The co-managers of BlackBerry Partners Fund announced they have merged their investment teams to focus exclusively on mobile venture capital investment opportunities under the BlackBerry Partners Fund brand. The fund was founded in 2008 with capital commitments from Research In Motion, Thomson Reuters and RBC. It was previously co-managed by JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners and has made 12 investments. RBC will remain a limited partner in the fund.

AT&T said it acquired certain assets of inCompass Wireless, which was previously the Enterprise Mobility Solutions group at inCode Telecom. The acquisition expands AT&T’s enterprise mobility solutions and professional services expertise. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Zenprise Inc., which provides enterprise mobile management and mobile device management software, said it acquired France-based Sparus Software. The acquisition allows Zenprise to reinforce its sales and marketing presence in Europe with in-country technical support, said the company.

ZTE Corp. said its revenues for the first nine months of this year increased 7.5% to $6.87 billion. Net profit grew 14.21% to $203.1 million, or 7 cents per share.

Leap Wireless said its revenues reached $602.7 million during the third quarter, up 0.5% from revenues of $599.5 million during the same period last year. Net loss for the quarter was $533.3 million, or $7.06 per share, compared with net loss of $65.4 million, or 85 cents per share, during the corresponding period in 2009.

Syniverse Holdings said its revenues for the third quarter were $166.9 million, up 43% from revenues of $116.7 million during the same period last year. Net income was $23.3 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with net income of $17.6 million, or 26 cents per share, during the corresponding period a year ago.

Crown Castle reported revenues of $481.9 million for the third quarter, an increase of 12% from revenues of $429.1 million during the third quarter of 2009. Net loss for the quarter was $135 million, or 49 cents per share, compared with net loss of $31.6 million, or 13 cents per share, during last year’s third quarter.

Glu Mobile said its revenues for the third quarter were $15.5 million, a decrease from revenues of $19.6 million during the third quarter of 2009. Net loss for the quarter was $1.6 million, or 4 cents per share, compared with net loss of $4 million, or 13 cents per share, during the same period last year.

USA Mobility reported revenues of $56.7 million during the third quarter, down from revenues of $59.1 million during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $15.4 million, or 69 cents per share, compared with net income of $13.9 million, or 58 cents per share, during the corresponding period in 2009. In addition, the company’s board of directors declared a quarterly cash distribution of 25 cents per share and a special cash distribution of $1 per share, both of which will be payable Dec. 10 to shareholders of record on Nov. 18.

InterDigital said its revenues for the third quarter were $91.9 million, up 22% from revenues of $75.5 million during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $35.5 million, or 79 cents per share, up 16% from net income of $30.6 million, or 69 cents per share, during the third quarter of 2009.

Novatel Wireless reported revenues of $75.6 million for the third quarter, a decrease from revenues of $94.3 million during the same period last year. Net loss for the quarter was $7.1 million, or 22 cents per share, compared with net income of $6.2 million, or 20 cents per share, reported during last year’s third quarter.

SBA Communications reported revenues of $158.6 million for the third quarter, up from revenues of $139.3 million during the same period a year ago. Net loss for the quarter was $34.6 million, or 30 cents per share, an improvement from net loss of $50.2 million, or 30 cents per share during last year’s third quarter.

Powerwave Technologies said its net sales for the third quarter were $156.8 million, up from sales of $139 million during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $7.9 million, or 6 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $1.1 million, or 1 cent per share, during the year-ago quarter.
Openwave Systems said its revenues for its first fiscal quarter of 2011, which ended Sept. 30, were $41.5 million, compared with revenues of $49.8 million during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $71,000, or breakeven per share, compared with net loss of $2.9 million, or 3 cents per share, during the corresponding period a year ago.

Verisign Inc. reported revenues of $173 million for the third quarter, up 10% from revenues of $157 million during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $785 million, or $4.48 per share, including a gain of $737 million for the sale of its Authentication Services business. That compares with net income of $54 million, or 28 cents per share, during the same period a year ago.

PCTEL Inc. reported third-quarter revenues of $17.3 million, up 26 percent from revenues of $13.7 million during the corresponding period last year. Net loss for the quarter was $929,000, or 5 cents per share, compared with net loss of $755,000, or 4 cents per share, during the same period last year.

Tellabs declared a regular dividend of 2 cents per share, payable on Nov. 26 to shareholders of record on Nov. 12.
