Jasper Wireless scored a huge deal to power America Movil’s machine-to-machine communications initiatives across North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Under terms of the deal, Jasper will provide its single platform solution to the world’s fourth-largest global operator. Financial details of the agreement were not released.
As wireless penetration rates among people increase, wireless operators worldwide are looking to machine-to-machine communications as a way to increase average revenue per user. While M2M ARPU is generally low, churn is also low and operators don’t need to subsidize devices. M2M communications is set to triple during the next five years, according to ABI Research.
“We are seeing an increasing demand from customers requiring M2M solutions to help simplify complex deployments and meet market opportunities more quickly. Jasper Wireless has developed a single, complete platform that enables device manufacturers and service providers to build and grow a connected device business. We are proud to partner with America Movil to accelerate market entry for M2M devices throughout Latin America,” said Jahangir Mohammed, chief executive officer, Jasper Wireless.
Jasper also powers AT&T Mobility’s M2M business, as well as Rogers, Telefónica, VimpelCom, KPN, Telstra and others. A company spokesman said that for its partnership with America Movil, Brazil and Mexico represent the most immediate high-growth markets, followed by key areas like Argentina and Chile.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company introduced an adapter in September that simplifies the process of building and managing connected devices. The company said the product is designed for machine-to-machine and consumer electronic devices and can reduce time spent on network connectivity development by up to six months. Jasper pointed to a spate of new connected devices – including electronic readers, automotive telematics, gaming, mobile healthcare and tracking devices – that are developed by experts in their respective industries who lack experience in network connectivity. The inexperience in network connectivity can lead to poor performance in the field. The company said its research indicates more than 60% of connected device launches are delayed because of application redesign needs that arise from issues like connection problems.
