The Open Mobile Video Coalition created the OMVC Mobile DTV Forum and welcomed its first non-broadcast members. Dell, Harris, LG Electronics and Samsung Mobile are the charter members of the forum.
Nuance Communications said its voice technology that powers the Ford SYNC system is now available as part of the Ford SYNC AppLink Software Development Kit. Third-party developers can now create a Nuance-powered voice user interface for any smartphone application developed for users by SYNC. Ford’s SYNC AppLink software allows for hands-free voice control of popular smartphone applications for iOS, Android and BlackBerry via Ford SYNC, said the company.
GreatCall Inc. announced its 5Star Personal Security Service, which allows customers to connect to a certified emergency response operator 24 hours a day using their Jitterbug cell phone. The emergency operator can arrange for assistance while providing support for the caller, said the company.
Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc. announced a collaboration with Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs to expand the manufacturing capacity of mirasol displays in Taiwan by constructing a new fabrication facility in Longtan. The facility, which is expected to be operational next year, is expected to draw up to $975 million in investments from Qualcomm.
Librestream said its Onsight mobile collaboration system is now working over Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network. The system provides commercial and government enterprises with the ability to use live video collaboration to leverage subject matter experts and speed decision making in the field. The company said Verizon’s network allows field workers to stream high resolution video, speak and draw onscreen with remote experts for immediate decision making.
Texas Instruments introduced the CC2567 device, which is a single-chip solution that enables direct short-range communication between ultra low-power, ANT+-enabled devices and mobile devices that use Bluetooth technology such as PCs, smartphones and tablets. The dual-mode device requires 80% less board area than a design with two single-mode solutions, said the company.
