TOKYO, Jan 13, 2011 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) – Japanese high-speed mobile internet company UQ Communications Inc. has forged a roaming agreement with South Korean communications giant KT Corp (KSE:030200).
The agreement mainly targets the Internet needs of business users who take their WiMAX-capable computers on overseas trips.
Starting from Friday, subscribers to UQ’s service will be able to access the internet via KT’s high-speed WiMAX service in 25 cities in South Korea for an initial daily fee of 3,000 won (US$2.70). From July, the charge will be raised to 10,000 won.
The agreement also enables subscribers to KT’s service to access the Internet in Japan via UQ’s WiMAX offering for a daily fee of 600 yen.
This represents the second roaming agreement for UQ following a tie-up last September in the U.S. with Clearwire Corp.
The company is working to increase the number of WiMAX users and to this end plans to clinch roaming agreements with WiMAX providers in other parts of Asia as well.
UQ’s WiMAX service faces competition from NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437), which launched a different type of high speed mobile Internet service based on the LTE (Long Term Evolution) protocol in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka in December.
