China Unicom 3G Users Tops 14mn

China Unicom | January 20, 2011 | Press Release

BEIJING, Jan 20, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) —

China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) yesterday released the latest operational data, according to which the company’s 3G users have reached 14.06 million by December 31, 2010, swelling 1.284 million or 15% from a month earlier.

Thus, China Unicom outpaces its target of 10 million users set earlier. Guosen Securities believes that the company’s profits from 3G services will rebound around the third quarter of 2011.

Since China Unicom began to sell iPhone 4 from September 2010, high-end mobile phones have boosted the company’s 3G-user growth, which topped 1.102 million and 1.12 million respectively in October and November.

In early 2011, China Unicom procured low-price WCDMA mobile phones worth CNY 5 million in partnership with third-party distributors and launched related service packages.

China International Capital Corporation Limited (CICC) points out in a report that more subsidies for smart phones will further push up China Unicom’s user base, which is likely to bulge 10 million to 25 million in the 2011 full year.
