CARACAS (Dow Jones)–Venezuela’s second-largest telephone service provider, Telefonica Venezuela, said it has reached agreement with Blackberry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) to continue blocking service to handsets that are reported stolen.
Officials at the local unit of Spain’s Telefonica SA (TEF), which operates under the Movistar brand, had threatened earlier in the week to stop selling Blackberrys if RIM wouldn’t accept the condition.
In a statement posted on his Twitter account late Wednesday, Telefonica Venezuela President Juan Antonio Abellan reported the agreement. He said that in December alone his company requested that RIM deactivate 41,000 Blackberrys.
