Venezuela, Brazil Complete Fiber-Optic Cable Link

CARACAS (Dow Jones)–Venezuela’s state-run telecommunications operator, Compania Anonima Nacional Telefonos de Venezuela, or Cantv, said Friday it has finished connecting a fiber-optic cable that links the southern part of the country to northern Brazil.

Venezuelan officials, speaking at a press conference that was broadcast on state-run television, said the project, which has been in the works for two years, is expected to improve Internet service in and around the Brazilian city of Manaus.

The project is part of an effort to strengthen relations between the two countries, they said.

In addition to the cable, both are “in talks over other development projects,” said Ricardo Menendez, Venezuela’s minister of science, technology and industry.

Earlier in the week, both countries’ foreign ministers met in Caracas and said they planned to collaborate in areas like agriculture and finance.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Brazil’s new president, Dilma Rousseff, are expected to meet during the first quarter of this year.
