QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s largest cellphone company, Porta Celular, the local unit of Mexican communications giant America Movil SAB, (AMX, AMX.MX) plans to invest about $180 million during 2011 in the Andean country, the company’s president told Dow Jones Newswires.
In an interview on Thursday, Alfredo Escobar said that the investment, which will be 45% higher compared with 2010, will go to technology and infrastructure to expand Porta’s coverage in the country.
During 2011 the company will begin testing long-term evolution technology, or fourth generation, and will continue to offer new services such as video chat and mobile payment services, among others.
In 2010 Porta Celular registered total sales in Ecuador of about $1.27 billion, a 10% increase from 2009.
