Taipei, Feb. 22 (CNA) HTC Corp., the world’s fifth-largest smartphone maker, plans to build an open platform for mobile video content on its smartphones and tablet PCs to create new value and strengthen ties with its partners, the company’s CEO said Monday.
“At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Spain, I found that the communications industry seemed to be exploding with opportunities, ” said HTC CEO Peter Chou.
“I hope our company’s value will be beyond hardware and software, and that value will come from content and brand awareness.”
Chou said HTC will not run an online application store, instead opting to create a mobile video platform that is expected to draw support from its worldwide partners, including content providers and telecom operators.
“In addition to offering our own content, we will also integrate other content sources in a flexible way to create more added value for our partners and customers,” he said.
The Taiwan-based company plans to install the new mobile platform on smartphones and tablets slated to be launched in the second quarter of this year.
Chou made the comments at the opening banquet for the annual conference of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). HTC is one of the co-organizers of the Feb. 21-25 conference, which is taking place in Taiwan for the first time.
