BY JULY, people with smartphones and other mobile devices can get online and surf the Internet at a much faster speed while travelling through MRT tunnels.
This deadline for telcos to complete installing in all MRT tunnels the equipment for the higher speed 3G or third-generation networks, was reinforced on Thursday by regulator Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).
Said its spokesman: ‘IDA will take appropriate measures should mobile operators fail to comply with the July 2011 deadline.’
Earlier, in Parliament, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew disclosed, for the first time, that the IDA had fined telcos for falling behind schedule at some MRT tunnels. When contacted, the IDA spokesman said all three telcos were fined in 2009, but declined to give the amount.
Modern 3G-enabled mobile devices, such as the Apple iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, can access the Internet at speeds of up to 7Mbps.
