Qualcomm Inc. says it does not foresee any significant impact to its semiconductor supply chain after last week’s earthquake in Japan and says it shouldn’t have a problem in continuing to supply product to its customers.
“Qualcomm is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last week. Our thoughts are with the people of Japan as they cope with the loss and destruction caused by this natural disaster,” said the firm before explaining that it would not be significantly impacted by the disaster.
“Qualcomm has multiple, geographically diverse sources for supply as well as production processes specifically designed to enable us to mitigate disruptions in our supply chain,” the firm said.
There has been some question as to whether or not the availability of Bismaleimide Triazine (BT) resin – used in chipset packages – would be impacted by the disaster, as it is manufactured in Japan, but Qualcomm says it has a backup.
“To account for any potential disruption in BT supply, we believe our use of buffer stock and adjustments to our near term material mix will enable us to mitigate potential supply disruptions to our customer base,” explained the company.
Qualcomm also noted it would “continue to monitor this rapidly developing situation.”
