TOT loses 2 more executives

TOT chairman Areepong Poocha-oom and another board member have resigned in a move seen as posing a major risk of further delays to the telecom agency’s 3G project.

Mr Areepong and Kurit Sombatsiri tendered their resignations with Information and Communications Technology Minister Juti Krairiksh yesterday, leaving the board with only four of its original 11 members, a source at the ICT Ministry said.

The remaining four board members cannot make any key decisions, including the contract signing for a nationwide 3G network expansion project. The four are the dean of Stamford International School Boonmark Sirinaowakul, Aekasit Wansom, Air Marshal Joongjaroon Saeng-ngamparn and Wiboontouch Sutantanakit.

Earlier, five members decided to quit because they feared a possible legal backlash over TOT’s move to demand 76 billion baht in compensation from mobile market leader Advanced Info Service resulting from past concession changes.

Some said they would be subject to legal action from AIS if the private concessionaire fought back against TOT’s compensation demand.

TOT is under pressure from the government to pursue massive compensation from AIS over a series of amendments to its concessions.
