In the highest ranking of businesses on the Forbes report of the top 2,000 publicly traded companies worldwide, Dallas-based AT&T Corp. (T) landed at No. 14 and Round Rock-based Dell Inc. (DELL) cruised in at No. 182.
AT&T reported sales of $124.3 billion, profits of $19.9 billion, assets marked at $268.5 billion and market value of $168.2 billion. Dell has approximately 14,000 employees in the Austin area and garnered $61.5 billion in annual sales, $2.6 billion in profits, assets of $38.6 billion and a market value of $29.5 billion.
Fifty companies from Texas made the list this year, including two from Austin in the forms of Dell and Whole Foods Market, Inc., which came in at No. 1,163. ExxonMobil was the highest ranked in Texas, taking a spot at No. 4. Top honors overall went to JPMorgan Chase at No.1.
Companies rounding out the top ten telecoms after AT&T’s No. 14 ranking include Vodafone at No. 27, Telefonica at No. 31, China Mobile at No. 34, Nippon Telegraph & Telephone at No. 48, Verizon Communications at No. 64, France Telecom at No. 74, America Movil at No. 88, Deutsche Telekom at No. 92, and Telecom Italia at No. 137.
The rankings from Forbes are based on a combination of sales, profits, assets and market value and exclude privately held companies. In contrast, the competing Fortune 500 is based specifically on estimated annual revenue and includes privately held firms. For a complete listing of all 2,000 companies, visit here.
