Qualcomm shows off its 1.5GHz beast of a processor in new video

Competition has never been hotter in the mobile chip space, with companies like NVIDIA, Qualcomm, TI, and Marvell all snapping at each other’s heels when it comes to providing the tastiest, low power, high performance products.

But seemingly fresh out of the chip fat fryer, wireless giant Qualcomm is serving up something sure to make mobile lovers everywhere salivate with anticipation – videos of its new 1.5GHz third generation SnapDragon processor in action.

The videos show the upcoming MSM8660 chip in action on a $1350 Bsquare MDP prototype, comparing it to the second generation 1GHz Snapdragon. Needless to say, the difference is impressive.

NVIDIA may not be quaking in its boots just yet – with Tegra 3 already demoed under the codename Kal-El back in February at MWC – but if Qualcomm pulls this one off, the mighty 1.5GHz chip could find itself becoming very popular, very quickly.

Indeed, Qualcomm partner HTC has already said it will be using the chip in its EVO 3D and HTC Sensation smartphones, in the near future.

Disappointingly, however, though the Scorpion CPU in the MSM8x60 is capable of reaching up to 1.5 GHz, in the Sensation it has apparently been clocked back to 1.2 GHz. Perhaps it’s because too much power corrupts?
