Google’s senior vice president for Chrome, Sundar Pichai, said his firm would not have made the progress it had with its Chromebooks and ultraportables had it not been for the remarkable Taiwanese ecosystem.
In a hat tip to the country which has given Google so much, the firm says it is setting up a laboratory in Taipei to develop computers running on Chrome OS.
“We have already hired many engineers and look forward to hiring more,” said Pichai to journalists at Google’s press event at the show.
Taiwan, he said, had the “depth of work” Google needed when it came to plugging in to the various OEMs and ODMs the country has in such abundance.
Indeed, Pichai said the lab would be used as a support hub for those PC makers in the APAC region wanting to work closely with Google.
The firm already boasts Taiwanese giants like Asustek Computer Inc., Quanta Computer Inc., and Compal Electronics Inc as close partners.
