Alcatel-Lucent | June 9, 2011 | Press Release
Moscow, June 9, 2011 –OJSC Mobile TeleSystems (“MTS” – NYSE: MBT), the leading telecommunications operator in Russia and the CIS, and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the modernization of MTS transport infrastructure by deploying a mobile IP network.
MTS has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s IP/MPLS-based mobile backhaul solution to gain more flexibility and efficiency following the introduction of 3G mobile broadband services in its network. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy for MTS its AnyG to LTE backhaul solution capable of cost-effectively transporting voice and data traffic in GSM, UMTS and HSPA networks, while establishing a solid foundation for the future introduction of LTE.
The solutions introduction enables MTS to ensure scalable, evolvable, cost-efficient and fully managed IP-based transport capable to meet not only the current operator’s requirements but able to adapt to the increase in traffic for years to come. With the help of the deployed solution MTS will modernize its transport network in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the Central and the North-West Federal Districts.
Within this MTS transport network modernization project Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7750 Service Router (SR) and 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR) along with the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) in line with related services including design, installation and commissioning for full turnkey project implementation.
“Mass deployment of bandwidth-hungry mobile data services requires more flexible and efficient transport infrastructure to meet the capacity need generated by 3G networks exponential growth,” said Oleg Larionov, MTS transport network department director. “It was important that we choose a full-scale solution for mobile backhaul network including related services that eliminate the risks associated with migration of mobile voice and data traffic from TDM to IP/MPLS backhaul.”
“Alcatel-Lucent’s industry leading mobile backhaul solution helps service providers world-wide to transform their networks to all-IP and we are ready to support this move for MTS while the operator evolves to a next-generation network,” said Alexander Tikhonov, Head of Alcatel-Lucent’s business in CIS.
