Motorola’s LTE partnership with Verizon Wireless keeps expanding as the device maker today unveiled its latest smartphone that includes a nod to the company’s past.
The new Droid Razr sports what Motorola claims is the thinnest LTE device chassis in existence measuring 7.1 millimeters thanks to its Kevlar fiber-infused construction. In addition, the device has Corning’s Gorilla Glass for its screen and a “water repellent nanocoating” designed to protect the phone and inside components against spills.
Specifications for the device include all the latest numbers, including a 4.3-inch “hyper-vibrant” display, Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 gigabyte of RAM, 16 GB of embedded memory and an included 16 GB memory card, 8-megapixel rear camera and front-facing camers, and a 1,780 mAh battery.
Verizon Wireless said it will begin selling the device early next month for $300 after all rebates and a two-year contract. The device will also join the recently launched iPhone 4S, which Verizon Wireless is selling for $200 (16 GB model), $300 (32 GB model) and $400 (64 GB model). Verizon Wireless is also offering the previous edition iPhone 4 (8 GB model) for $100.
The Droid Razr’s device specifications are a modest steup up from the recently launched Droid Bionic, which launched at Verizon Wireless last month after a last-minute delay. The Bionic was part of Verizon Wireless’ original LTE device showcase during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, but received some last minute upgrades to set it apart from the already launched devices from HTC, Samsung and LG.
For those with a perverse sense of humor, the Razr name will bring back both the good and bad times at Motorola. The device maker rode the wave of the razor-thin devices popularity in the mid-2000s, only to see that turn into an overreliance when prices dropped and Apple turned the space on its head with the original iPhone in 2007.
