U.S.-based VelaTel Global Communications (previously known as ChinaTel Group) said it will continue focusing on deployments in Peru next year, according to Ryan Alvarez, VP of marketing for VelaTel in an interview with RCR Wireless News. Asked about company’s expansion to other Latin American country, Alvarez said that there is some interest and VelaTel’s team is always looking, but the main focus is Peru for 2012.
Launched in August, VelaTel’s Go Movil provides WiMAX and LTE broadband Internet access across seven cities in Peru under the Go Movil brand. Those markets include Trujillo, Ica, Piura, Chiclayo, Chimbote, Cusco and Arequipa.

“We aim to expand our network in Peru by building more sites, more retail stores and more distribution. We plan on building for the next 4-plus years and continue giving our customers a great service,” said Alvarez. The executive added that VelaTel is focused on hitting previously set goals for the company. “We are only 3 months into our 5 year plan, things are moving fast because of our deployment schedule but in line.”
Earlier this year during an interview with RCR Wireless News, VelaTel’s CEO George Alvarez said there are plans to expand its operation to four additional Latin American countries that are similar to Peru in terms of mobile and Internet penetration. Brazil and Mexico might not figure among the four – at least for now.
