The Bahamas Telecommunications Co. (BTC), a unit of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), has upgraded its mobile networks to HSPA+ to enable its customers to access mobile Internet broadband.
Until improving its network to high-speed packet access plus (HSPA+) technology, Bahamians previously had access only to second-generation (2G) mobile services.

The launch was held at the official opening of BTC’s new flagship store at the Marathon Mall in the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau. The HSPA+ network was turned on by Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham.
CTC CEO Geoff Houston said that “for both Bahamians and the tourists on which this economy depends, this is another significant step forward in the modernization of the telecommunications infrastructure for the islands.” Ingraham added that it complements the government’s e-government initiative, and that BTC’s introduction of HSPA+ demonstrates the company’s commitment to the Bahamian public.
CWC purchased a majority shareholding in BTC from the Bahamian government. CWC is currently introducing HSPA+ mobile data services in a number of its Caribbean businesses.
