India’s GSM operators add 7.5M subscribers in December

The GSM telecom operators in India added 7.55 million new subscribers in the month of December last year, according to new figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

The total GSM subscriber base now stands at 639.64 million. The operators added 6.68 million subscribers in November 2011.

Idea Cellular led the tally by adding 2.39 million new subscribers in December, taking its overall base to 106.3 million and a market share of 16.63%.

Idea was followed by Uninor, which added 2.12 million subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 36.3 million and a market share of 5.68%.

Bhartil Airtel, the largest GSM player in the country, added 0.96 million new users, taking its total base to 175.65 million and a market share of 27.46%.

Vodafone Essar, the second largest GSM operator, added 0.91 million subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 147.74 million and a market share of 23.10%.

State-owned MTNL and BSNL added 0.04 million and 0.42 million subscribers, taking their base to 5.44 million and 92.56 million respectively.

Aircel added 0.68 million new subscribers, taking its total base to 61.64 million and a market share of 9.64%.

The latest figures also reveal that Maharashtra telecom circle added the most number of subscribers in the month of December at 1.16 million.

The UP (East) telecom circle has the maximum number of subscribers at 53.88 million.
