IBM (NYSE:IBM) unveiled Mobile Foundation, a portfolio of products and services designed to help organizations capitalize on the proliferation of mobile environments, at its ongoing Impact 2012 Conference in Las Vegas this week. Aimed at solutions for laptops, smartphones, and tablets, the new offering follows IBM’s recent acquisition of Worklight and targets a $22B market opportunity that is expected to grow to $36B by 2015.

IBM recently surveyed more than 700 CIOs, three-quarters of whom said their companies embraced a mobile strategy because a flexible workplace delivers a 20% improvement in employee productivity. According to IBM’s survey, CIOs are significantly reducing the cost of doing business by decreasing their dependence on email, improving social collaboration, and adopting cloud technologies to reach mobile workers.

Indeed, mobile is one of the four pillars that Gartner says will drive business in the coming years. Cloud, social, mobility, and an explosion in information were cited by Gartner as a new nexus of forces affecting business strategies. These forces necessitate companies to re-invent themselves in order to become more focused on “post-modern business, creative destruction, and simplicity,” according to Gartner.

In its launch statement, IBM underscored that it has steadily invested in the mobile space for more than a decade, both organically and through acquisitions.

The Mobile Foundation offers organizations the capability to connect cloud and mobile environments; build and connect mobile applications; manage and secure mobile environments; and extend existing capabilities to capitalize on new business opportunities.
