Just days after announcing a small cell partnership with Alcatel-Lucent, Sprint Nextel today said it has an agreement with Samsung to develop small cell network infrastructure for the carrier’s ongoing Network Vision program.
The agreement calls for Sprint Nextel and Samsung to bolster the carrier’s network capacity and coverage using Samsung’s small cells that will be part of Sprint Nextel’s heterogeneous network plans. Those plans will target indoor venues.
Samsung is one of three vendor partners working with Sprint Nextel on the $5 billion Network Vision upgrade. The other two are Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson, so don’t be surprised if a similar small cell announcement is on deck with Ericsson.
Samsung has been tasked with providing infrastructure equipment to Sprint Nextel covering the upper Midwest, Northwest and Puerto Rico. Alcatel-Lucent is providing equipment along the East Coast and Southwest, while Ericsson is providing equipment to the Southeast and lower Midwest.
Sprint Nextel noted earlier this year that it was looking to place a greater emphasis on small cell opportunities to increase capacity and coverage of its network at the expense of distributed antenna systems.
